Description

Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney explores the controversial life of Nigeria’s most famous musician, Fela Kuti (Fela). A revolutionary voice during the 1970s who used music as his weapon, Kuti had no fear and fought against oppression and dictatorship. His anger fuelled his creative fires and Fela used his Afrobeat sounds to express his desire to improve the quality of life for the people of Nigeria. Although he was frequently jailed and beaten for speaking out and exposing corruption he continued to fight for social change. Finding Fela provides a revealing look at the colourful life of an iconic artist, including his wedding to 27 women, his drug use and his promiscuity. After producing more than 50 albums, Fela passed away from an AIDS-related illness in 1997 leaving behind a musical legacy. The musical talents of this fascinating performer are showcased in this toe-tapping experience. Sarah Burgess

Co-presented by The Royal Conservatory.
