explicitly mapped out based on cliques. Gathering
together and editing footage from over 200 of these films,
Beyond Clueless weaves together a comprehensive
visual essay exploring the tropes behind a distinct
segment of American film history. The spliced
narratives showcase the connections between characters
and storylines, indicating key patterns and teasing
out potential thematic subtexts that lie within these
worlds. Fairuza Balk provides in-depth theoretical
narration that guides us through an era that objectified
an apple pie, dabbled in occultism and tried to make
“fetch” happen. Gabor Pertic, Hot Docs
