With unprecedented access and jaw-dropping imagery, Cartel Land is a riveting, on-the-ground look at two active vigilante groups fighting murderous drug cartels. In the Mexican state of Michoacán, Dr. Jose Mireles leads the Autodefensas, a citizen uprising against a violent cartel that has wreaked havoc on the region for years. Meanwhile, in a narrow desert corridor known as Cocaine Alley in Arizona, Tim “Nailer” Foley heads a small paramilitary group whose goal is to stop the drug wars from seeping across the border. Filmmaker Matthew Heineman embeds himself in the heart of darkness as Foley, Mireles and the cartels each vie to bring their own brand of justice to a society where institutions have failed. Executive produced by Kathryn Bigelow (Academy Award-winning director of Zero Dark Thirty), Cartel Land is a chilling, visceral meditation on the breakdown of order and the blurry line between good and evil.
