Description

Sedona International Film Festival presents the fourth feature in the new “Art & Architecture in Cinema” series: “Renoir: Revered and Reviled”. The event will show in Sedona on Monday, June 20 at 4 and 7 p.m. at the festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre. This is the fourth in a series of seven featured programs.

The festival is proud to be the official host of the new series, joining hundreds of theatres around the globe for this special exhibition on screen. Cinema guests can now enjoy unprecedented high definition access into the lives of renowned artists, their art and the fabulous museums and galleries that are not only the custodians of such masterpieces, but works of art in their own right.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir is known and loved for his impressionist paintings of Paris. These paintings count among the world’s favorites. Renoir, however, grew tired of this style and changed course. This stunning film — based on the remarkable collection of 181 Renoirs at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia — examines the direction he then took and why it provokes such extreme reactions right up to today.

Some claim they are repulsed by Renoir’s later works and some claim they are seduced. What may surprise many is that among the many artists who sought Renoir’s new works out and were clearly highly influenced by them were the two giants of the 20th century — Picasso and Matisse. The film is a fresh new biography of this artistic giant but more than that it uncovers a rarely told story that places Renoir as a critical link between the old and the new.

This curated collection of acclaimed films will give audiences around the U.S. an intimate and informed experience with some of the world's leading artists and masterpieces. This series will bring the great artistic treasures of the world to audiences who may not have direct access. With the highest quality productions and unrivaled expert narration, this is as close to a museum experience as any culture lover could hope for.
