Title: As We Enter the New Quantum Era

Abstract: Quantum theory rewrote the rulebook for physics over a century ago. We have since moved from being curious spectators of the quantum realm to active participants, intricately choreographing quantum effects to achieve specific objectives. We harness quantum effects for precise measurement, more powerful computation, more secure communication, and many more applications yet to be discovered.

The quantum rulebook offers a double-edged sword for cybersecurity: quantum computers will be powerful enough to break some of security currently protecting cyberspace, while the advent of new cybersecurity tools, such as quantum cryptography, will be secure in an era of quantum computers. What's needed is a large, coordinated effort to ensure our digital information will remain secure in the quantum age.

Through ongoing advances in quantum information research, we are entering a new era of science and technology. The challenges are profound, while the possibilities seem limitless.

In his Oct. 5 public lecture at Perimeter Institute, Michele Mosca (Institute for Quantum Computing, Perimeter Institute) will explore quantum technologies -- those that already exist, and those yet to come -- and how they will affect our lives.


Biography: Michele Mosca obtained his doctorate in Mathematics in 1999 from the University of Oxford on the topic of Quantum Computer Algorithms.

His research interests include quantum computation and cryptographic tools that will be safe against quantum technologies. He is globally recognized for his drive to help academia, industry and government prepare our cyber systems to be safe in an era with quantum computers.

He is co-founder of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, a Professor in the Department of Combinatorics & Optimization of the Faculty of Mathematics, and a founding member of Waterloo’s Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. He is the co-founder and Director of CryptoWorks21, an NSERC-funded training program in quantum-safe cryptography. He co-founded the ETSI-IQC workshop series in Quantum-Safe Cryptography which brings together a broad range of stakeholders working toward globally standardized quantum-safe cryptography. In 2015, he co-founded evolutionQ Inc. in order to support organizations as they evolve their quantum-vulnerable systems and practices to quantum-safe ones.

Dr. Mosca’s work is published widely in top journals, and he co-authored the respected textbook “An Introduction to Quantum Computing” (OUP). Dr. Mosca has won numerous academic awards and honours, including 2010 Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, the Premier’s Research Excellence Award (2000-2005), Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) since 2010, Canada Research Chair in Quantum Computation (2002-2012), University Research Chair at the University of Waterloo (2012-present), and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2013).

RESERVATIONS ARE required to be seated in the Black Hole Bistro and can be made at bistro@pitp.ca. Dinner reservations will be scheduled between 5 pm - 6 pm for those with tickets and later for those watching the lecture in the Bistro.

NEW WAITING LINE EXPERIENCE:
There will be a waiting line for last minute cancelled (or ‘no show’) seats on the night of the lecture. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Come to Perimeter and pick-up a waiting line chit at the Waiting Line sign and then participate in pre-lecture activities - no need to wait in line. An announcement will be made in the Bistro at 6:45pm if theatre seats are available. Note: you must arrive in person to be part of the waiting line and be in the Bistro when the waiting line announcement is made.

NO DISAPPOINTMENTS:
Everyone who comes to Perimeter will be able to participate in the lecture. The public lecture will be shown simultaneously on closed circuit television in the licensed comfort of the Black Hole Bistro or the quiet of the Time Room for any members of the waiting line who are not able to get a theatre seat.
