Darius McCollum has been jailed 32 times for impersonating New York City bus drivers and subway conductors. His remarkable story is so compelling that it is now being adapted for a feature film with Julia Roberts. As a boy, Darius found sanctuary from bullies in the subway. At 15, he smoothly drove a packed train eight stops by himself. Since then, he has commandeered hundreds of vehicles, staying en route and on schedule. Although he has never damaged any property or hurt anyone, Darius, who has been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, has spent 23 years in maximum security prison for these acts—embodying the system’s failure to include even the most benign rule-benders.
