Description

Doc Soup: Hot Docs' monthly screening series that presents Festival hits and award-winning docs.

Regarded as one of the greatest writers and producers of soul music, Bert Berns is responsible for penning hits everyone loves to sing along to, like “Twist & Shout”, “Piece of My Heart” and “Hang on Sloopy.” A chronicle of his life and career, BANG! shows how Berns rose from modest beginnings to build two record labels: Bang Records and Shout Records, where he recorded chart-topping tunes for some of the biggest names in rock and roll, including Solomon Burke, The Isley Brothers, Wilson Pickett and The Drifters, and helped launch the careers of superstars Neil Diamond and Van Morrison. A nostalgic, funny and historical film, Berns’ musical intuition and ingenuity garnered him the respect and friendship of many iconic musicians and was affectionately referred to by some as “the only white soul brother.” Featuring rare performance footage, interviews with Paul McCartney, Ben E. King and Keith Richards, among others, and a classic soundtrack, BANG! The Bert Berns Story is a heartfelt and celebratory tribute to a soul music legend.

Director Brett Berns in attendance for Q&As at all screenings.
