Canada treated its LGBTQ community very differently in the 1950s and 1960s than it does today, both in society and in public policy. Inspired by McCarthyism in the United States, Canada’s RCMP was empowered to carry out a secret campaign to identify, investigate and dismiss every gay person employed in Canada’s public service.
Sarah Fodey's feature-length documentary, The Fruit Machine, investigates the lasting impact a rarely discussed aspect of RCMP history has had on the lives of men and women targeted by these policies. The screening will be followed by a moderated guest panel discussion.
