ACCIDENTAL COURTESY: DARYL DAVIS, RACE, & AMERICA
Daryl Davis is not your ordinary race-relations activist. His controversial approach to combating racial animus involves befriending leaders of the Ku Klux Klan and collecting memorabilia from members who have renounced the KKK. Davis purposefully engages with white supremacists by asking, “How can you hate me when you know nothing about me?” Director Matthew Ornstein presents a provocative profile of a fascinating man, and doesn’t shy away from a critical perspective that asks, “in a time when embattled voices are trying to stress that black lives matter, why focus on those who hate?”

Two film directors, Mike Ott and Nathan Silver, arrive in Denver to create a film with a struggling local actor named Arthur Martinez. As their collaboration begins, the team sets upon the idea of making a film about Arthur’s life, with Arthur playing himself. Soon, the film we are watching becomes a document of the process, and the line between fiction and reality spins itself into a whirlwind of performance, documentary, doubt, and manipulation. ACTOR MARTINEZ is a brilliant examination of the fragile ethics of filmmaking, an often-hilarious story of the pitfalls of the collaborative process.
