Co-presented with VIVACE, Opera Philadelphia's community for Young Friends, CHEVALIER was inspired by the life of pioneering Black composer, musician, and fencer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Set in 18th-century Paris, the film explores Bologne's rise to fame and struggle to gain acceptance in the elite circles of French society, complete with a violin duel with Mozart, an ill-fated love affair, and a falling out with Marie Antoinette and her court.
Opera Philadelphia presents Bologne's only surviving opera, The Anonymous Lover, this January 31 and February 2 at the Academy of Music.
