Ashuelot Concerts is excited to present the first of five concerts at The Park Theatre as part of its 2022-23 International Concert Series. Musicians who regularly perform at the world’s great concert halls: Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein, Berlin’s Pierre Boulez Saal and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw are traveling to the Monadnock Region to participate in this new concert series. We are excited to unite musicians of different backgrounds and nationalities and bring them here to share their love of music with our growing audience of adults and children.
Ashuelot Concerts Artistic Directors Louisa Stonehill (violin) and Nicholas Burns (piano) are joined for this powerful program of piano quartets by Internationally renowned chamber musicians - violist Masumi Per Rostad (ex-Pacifica Quartet) and cellist Nicholas Canellakis (Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center).
11/6/22: Gade, Andrée, & Mendelssohn – Piano Trios

Mendelssohn’s C minor Piano Trio has resonated deeply with musicians and audiences alike since it was premiered in 1846. Great composers such as Brahms and Schumann paid homage to it in their own later compositions and it remains a work of Symphonic excitement, energy and passion. Alongside this ‘master trio of the age’, are two works by brilliant, lesser known composers. Danish Composer Niels Gade worked alongside Mendelssohn in Leipzig as assistant conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. He conducted many important premieres including the first performance of Mendelssohn’s famous violin concerto. Gade’s Novelletten for Piano Trio are five character pieces, each with a different contrasting mood. Elfrida Endree was the first female cathedral organist in her native Sweden. She studied with Niels Gade and her superb Piano Trio in G minor deserves to be a regular on the concert platform.

2/17/23: The Steinberg Duo performs Beethoven, Schubert, & Reizenstein

Schubert’s Great work for violin & piano, the Fantasie in C major is the centerpiece of this program of violin sonatas. Written in the last year of Schubert’s tragically short life, this dazzlingly virtuosic work offers some of the most sublime writing for these combination of instruments. Alongside is Beethoven’s early Sonata in A major, a pioneering work that paved the way for composers who followed, and Franz Reizenstein’s epic Violin Sonata from 1945. Louisa Stonehill & Nicholas Burns recorded this rarely heard work in 2016 for the Lyrita label. Reizenstein’s style will be familiar to fans of Shostakovich and Prokofiev, yet combines the dramatic aspects of those composers with stunningly haunting melodies and evocative textures.
4/2/23: Rachmaninov, Dvorák, & Ravel – Piano Trios
International Cellist Guy Johnston returns with his Stradivarius Cello to join Nick & Louisa for a program of Rachmaninoff, Dvorák & Ravel. International sensation, cellist Guy Johnston joins Artistic Directors Louisa Stonehill (violin) and Nicholas Burns (piano) for this program of Piano Trio favorites. Guy will be performing this concert on his Stradivarius Cello from 1690.
Ravel’s incredible piano trio was written in a frenzy at the very outset of World War I in August 1914. Ravel wrote “I am working on the Trio with the sureness and lucidity of a madman.” Desperate to enlist in the French Army, Ravel found that “The idea that I should be leaving at once made me get through five months' work in five weeks! My Trio is finished.” Alongside this unique masterpiece are two gorgeous shorter works by Rachmaninov and Dvorak.
