Presenting Scripps News Longform's original documentary, In Real Life: Voices of Nature, which will feature a Q&A with Director & Scripps News correspondent Sam Eaton, and guests Joshua Zeman (The Loneliest Whale) & David Rothenberg (Whale Music).


This fascinating documentary film tells the story of scientists using artificial intelligence to understand and potentially speak back to elephants, whales, bats, and other animals. Filmed in Kenya, Israel, Germany, and the US, it’s a global cinematic journey into the groundbreaking field of interspecies communication and what it would mean both for us humans and for the natural world.

Sam Eaton


Sam Eaton is a correspondent for Scripps News Longform, the award-winning documentary unit of the E.W. Scripps Company’s newly launched 24-hour national news network. His reporting and documentary films from the US and beyond focus on climate change, biodiversity, and the communities struggling to adapt to the cascading effects of these dual crises. Before that Sam was the founding Senior Reporter for sustainability coverage at Marketplace, a Pulitzer Center grantee, and a contributing Special Correspondent for PBS NewsHour, The Nation magazine, and PRI’s The World. His reporting and filmmaking have taken him to more than two dozen countries around the world. Sam’s films have screened at Washington DC’s Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital, DOC NYC, The World Economic Forum, and the United Nations Secretariat. He is a three-time winner of the Society of Environmental Journalists Awards for Outstanding Beat Reporting and Outstanding Investigative Reporting in a large market and is currently serving on the SEJ board of directors.


Joshua Zeman


Joshua Zeman is one of the leading voices in documentary storytelling. His critically-acclaimed film Cropsey is considered one of the top true crime documentaries of the past decade. In 2017, Zeman executive produced and directed The Killing Season for A&E, an unscripted docu series also executive produced by Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney. Zeman also directed Murder Mountain, a 6-part docu-series for Netflix that’s been called “a must-watch” by The Daily Beast. Earlier this year, Zeman EP’s and directed The Sons of Sam, which was the #1 watched show on Netflix around the world during the week it was released. Most recently, Zeman directed The Loneliest Whale, a cinematic quest to find the 52Hz Whale, whom scientists believe has spent its entire life in solitude. The film, which was executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Adrian Grenier, has been called “a modern-day Moby Dick" that “will keep you on the edge of your seat” by the LA Times.


David Rothenberg


Musician and philosopher David Rothenberg is the author of Why Birds Sing, Bug Music, Survival of the Beautiful and many other books, published in at least eleven languages. He has more than forty recordings out, including One Dark Night I Left My Silent House which came out on ECM, and most recently In the Wake of Memories and Faultlines. He has performed or recorded with Pauline Oliveros, Peter Gabriel, Ray Phiri, Suzanne Vega, Scanner, Elliott Sharp, Umru, Iva Bittová, and the Karnataka College of Percussion. Whale Music is his latest book and film. Rothenberg is Distinguished Professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
