Description

In Anselm, Oscar-nominated director Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas; Wings of Desire; Pina)  creates a remarkable portrait of Anselm Kiefer, one of the most innovative and influential artists of our time. Kiefer’s paintings and sculptures confront his home country of Germany’s dark past, exploring its controversial history and particularly taboo subjects of Nazi rule through large scale artworks.

Shot in 3D and 6K-resolution, the film presents a cinematic experience of the artist’s inspiration, processes, and fascination with Germany’s painful history. For over two years, Wenders (born the same year as Kiefer at the end of World War II) traces Kiefer’s five-decade career, spanning his early life in post-war Germany to his current home at a 200-acre studio in France. Anselm is a portrait of an artist and his unflinching scrutiny of humanity, history, and myth.

The film is presented at Sag Harbor Cinema in 3D, thanks to the kind support of the Philip I Kent Charitable Fund.
