On April 26, Mozart’s timeless comedy returns to cinemas worldwide with a live transmission from the Metropolitan Opera. Conductor Joana Mallwitz, in her Met debut, takes the podium to conduct a stellar ensemble cast including American bass-baritone Michael Sumuel as the clever valet Figaro, Ukrainian soprano Olga Kulchynska as the wily maid Susanna, Canadian baritone Joshua Hopkins as the skirt-chasing Count, Italian soprano Federica Lombardi as his anguished wife, and French mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa as the adolescent page Cherubino.
ACT I
A manor house near Seville, the 1930s. Figaro and Susanna, servants to the Count and Countess Almaviva, are about to get married. Figaro is furious that the womanizing Count has made advances towards his bride. When the pageboy Cherubino overhears the Count as he again tries to seduce Susanna, the Count orders him to join the army.
ACT II
The Countess is distressed about the loss of love in her life. Encouraged by Figaro and Susanna, she agrees to set a trap for her husband by sending him on a fake rendezvous. Confusion ensues when the Count suspects that someone is hiding in his wife’s bedroom, but Susanna and Figaro save the situation. To complicate matters further, Figaro finds himself confronted by Marcellina, who demands that he repay the money that he owes her or marry her instead. The Count agrees to judge her case, leaving Figaro and Susanna’s wedding in peril.
ACT III
In a surprise turn of events, Figaro is revealed to be Marcellina’s long-lost son. Susanna and the Countess write a letter to the Count confirming his rendezvous with Susanna that night. The Count is enraged to discover that Cherubino is still in the house but is once again forced into submission when Cherubino’s girlfriend, Barbarina, reveals how the Count made advances towards her. All finally gather for the wedding.
ACT IV
That night, various members of the household find themselves in the garden, including Susanna and the Countess, dressed in each other’s clothes. Mistaken identities lead to declarations of love, both sincere and in jest, until finally the Count’s philandering ways are exposed. After moments of agonizing doubt, the Countess forgives her husband, and all the couples are reunited.
