Description
Cuba’s recent reforms brought a variety of changes to the country: an improved relationship with the United States, an increase in small business ownership and…car races? For the past several decades, a devoted group of auto enthusiasts kept the sport alive, even though the revolutionary government banned it as an “elitist” activity. We follow a diverse group of drivers as they fight to gain recognition from officials who use any excuse (including an impending visit by the Pope) to delay the nation’s first official race since 1959. Throughout the film, these car lovers discuss their strategies for putting their vehicles together, share their opinions of the latest developments in Cuban society and allow their unsanctioned drag races to be captured on film, giving us a glimpse of the thrills which may soon be available for all to see. –Jack Hamm
