The story goes, Berry Gordy decided to take total control of his song. So on January 12, 1959, he borrowed $800 from his family's loan fund, to start his own record label called Tamla. We in Motor City decided if Berry Gordy could accomplish so much with so little, then we have to honor his gift to the world.
