Bright, smiling, Caesar Winslow, favorite son of the Kingsborough Houses. The sort of guy whose face was made for the cover of the recruitment brochure, a fact not lost on Hudson U. They’re bending over backwards to hold his place for the fall semester, but he can’t bring himself to step onto that long bus upstate. He’s still shaking from the loss of his Uncle Terry, desperate to leave things on an okay note with his on/off girlfriend Kaia, and facing the fact that, as he gets older, the ‘hood doesn’t love him back the way it used to. 72 Hours stirs a timely immediacy into the makeup of its forebears, from Cooley High to Boyz N The Hood, while maintaining their essential focus on a hero pinched between a familiarly volatile home and a threateningly bright future, encapsulating the pain and promise of being young, gifted, and black. —Jonathan Kieran
