Description
Remember those urban, rebel-poets from the 50's? The Beats: Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs. But what about Bob Kaufman? From his mysterious early life, to his uncompromisingly radical politics, and his equally stalwart commitment to his craft and beatnik ideals, Kaufman was and is the paradigmatic Beat. And yet, his memory was almost completely lost to time. Long excluded from the canon, no doubt for reasons related to him being a black man, under the LA Rebellion legend Billy Woodberry's hand we can now be sure his legacy won't stay dead. Using archival material, poetry readings, and interviews with those who knew Bob best, he reconstructs Kaufman's world and puts forth a damn good argument for taking him out of the shadows. What he reveals is an unblinking poet of vital intensity, driven by a deep sense of justice, welded firmly to the Earth. -Peter Goldberg
Billy Woodberry was one of the directors of the L.A. Rebellion film movement. His work has been screened at MoMA, Harvard Film Archive, Camera Austria Symposium, Human Rights Watch Film Festival and Tate Modern.
