Description
After he’s fired, dumped, and kicked out of his parents’ house, Eli’s so beaten down that his father’s rusty box truck (also his sole inheritance) looks like a cozy mobile home, and a snowy death-slog of an errand upstate seems like a welcome escape from NYC’s under-plumbed hive of squabbling weirdos. Up the freeway, where the air’s clear and the moonshine the color of motor oil, Eli meets brawling, enigmatic Anya, proprietress of “The Soul Machine” and ardent trichophage—that means she eats hair. If it’s not already clear, we are far from the generic angst and smooth skin of young romance. Are We Not Cats draws on a deep affection for the marginal and polluted, the worn-out and itchy. It’s driven by an innate understanding that, like all obsessions, love is invasive—a foreign object in your system, a hair on your tongue. —Jon Kieran
Xander Robin received a BFA at the Florida State University College of Motion Picture Arts. His debut feature, Are We Not Cats, premiered at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival.
