ArtsCinema Series Music: In Search of Haydn

IN SEARCH OF HAYDN In this eagerly-awaited documentary, Phil Grabsky’s biographical account of Haydn’s life is a visual and aural extravaganza, including breath-taking performances by some of the world’s most celebrated musicians. Following his award winning documentaries, In Search of Mozart and In Search of Beethoven, Phil Grabsky continues the series with In Search of Haydn. Director Phil Grabsky follows the same format of presenting the composer’s biography and music chronologically. Through intimate and revealing interviews with experts and detailed extracts from Haydn’s personal recollections, the audience gains tremendous insight not only into Haydn’s music but an appreciation of the artist himself. The emphasis of the film, as with the previous films, is on the performance – and interpretation – of Haydn’s music, with performances from the world’s greatest musicians and orchestras.

ArtsCinema Series: I, Claude Monet

From award-winning director Phil Grabsky comes this fresh new look at Monet – possibly the world’s favourite artist – through his own words. Using letters and other private writings I, Claude Monet reveals new insight into the man who painted Impression, Sunrise, the picture that gave birth to impressionism, and who became perhaps the most influential artist of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Monet’s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even suicide. However, as his art developed and his love of gardening led to the glories of his Giverny garden, his humour, insight and love of life are revealed. Told through Monet’s own words and shot on location at the very spots he painted, the film features his most loved paintings in an unforgettable, immersive art experience. Directed by Phil Grabsky

Reverand Horton Heat with the Messer Chups

Seeing REVEREND HORTON HEAT live is a transformative experience. Flames come off the guitars. Heat singes your skin. There’s nothing like the primal tribal rock & roll transfiguration of a Reverend Horton Heat show. Jim becomes a slicked-back 1950's rock & roll shaman channeling Screamin’ Jay Hawkins through Buddy Holly, while Jimbo incinerates the Stand-Up Bass. And then there are the“Heatettes”. Those foxy rockabilly chicks dressed in poodle-skirts and cowboy boots slamming the night away. It’s like being magically transported into a Teen Exploitation picture from the 1950's that’s currently taking place in the future. Listening to the REVEREND HORTON HEAT is tantamount to injecting pure musical nitrous into the hot rod engine of your heart. The Reverend’s commandants are simple... ROCK HARD, DRIVE FAST, AND LIVE TRUE.

ArtsCinema Series: VAN GOGH & JAPAN

“I envy the Japanese” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan, it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. Through journeying from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, to Van Gogh’s adopted home of Provence, France and eventually to Japan itself, this film provides a fascinating look at just how remarkable this influence proved to be. One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the huge impact it had on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh. Seeing Japanese art in art shops and small Parisian galleries and then creating his own perception of Japan – through in-depth research, print collecting and detailed discussions with other artists – Van Gogh’s encounter with Japanese artworks gave his work a new and exciting direction.
