Our first film in our Staff Picks' Series, chosen by projectionist Hakeem Pierstorff, is David Lynch's 1977 cult classic Eraserhead! About this film, Hakeem writes, 'I chose this film because watching Eraserhead is an experience unlike any other. The film transports you into a world that feels so mysterious and alien, and completely familiar all at the same time. While it does have a very engaging straight-forward plot, its incredibly abstract and surrealist presentation allows the viewer to come up with dozens of different interpretations of the film's deeper meaning. David Lynch's distinct tone, atmosphere, and imagery are worth the price of admission alone, but the feeling and open-ended nature of the film will leave you thinking about it long after the credits have finished rolling.

Often cited as a masterpiece of surrealism and one of the most influential films of all time, Eraserhead is a bizarre and macabre cult classic that exploded onto the film scene in 1977 entirely through word-of-mouth— instantly solidifying itself as a classic and launching the career of the now legendary filmmaker David Lynch (Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks). And it’s easy to see why. Marrying early silent film comedy with gnostic body horror, and inspired by David Lynch's own experience of living with his wife and newborn daughter in the industrial factory-towns of 70s Philadelphia, Eraserhead is a nightmarish puzzle of a film— filled with uncanny imagery, hauntingly ambient sound mixing, and industrial production design. With these different aspects of the film working together at full force, you’ll instantly feel like you’ve just stepped into the deranged nightmares of a madman. Watching Eraserhead is akin to looking at a Rorschach test, it leaves you with just enough of a story to keep you along for the ride, but to say the true meaning of the film is ambiguous would be an understatement. 100 different people could watch the film and get 100 different interpretations of the themes, messages, and visuals. It's a film that's practically begging to be analyzed, studied, and examined. Love it or hate it, there is no denying that Eraserhead is truly an unforgettable film unlike any other, and will stay in your head long after the credits have finished rolling.
