A Simple Machine

“A Simple Machine” — the award-winning debut feature film from Mark Alan Hoffman — is a deeply human story about economic independence, personal freedom, and the cost of wanting less in a culture built on more. The film follows Nick Allander (Richard Blackmon), a recent college graduate drowning in debt who quietly dismantles his own life in pursuit of radical frugality and self-reliance, but without telling the woman he loves. What begins as a private experiment in minimalism becomes a reckoning with identity, responsibility, and the meaning of freedom in a market-driven world. Central to the film’s visual and philosophical language is the bicycle as symbol and instrument. For Nick, the bike becomes both a practical solution and quiet rebellion: a tool of economic independence, mobility without debt, and a form of technology that enhances human agency rather than diminishing it.

American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez

Against political resistance and industry skepticism, Luis Valdez pushes Chicano storytelling from the fields to the film screen with “Zoot Suit” and “La Bamba”, crafting iconic works that challenge, celebrate, and expand America’s story. An auteur emerges from America’s underclass: from migrant farmworker to revolutionary artist, Luis Valdez changed American culture. In the 1960s, his El Teatro Campesino performed on flatbed trucks and helped mobilize workers to win the first farmworker union contract. His “Zoot Suiet” was the first Chicano play on Broadway. Despite critical rejection that killed the show, he persevered, creating “La Bamba” — a breakout blockbuster that authentically depicted Mexican American life to the world. Now in its 60th year, El Teatro continues to be a beacon for Latino/a creators. This is the story of an artist who gave voice to the overlooked and opened pathways for generations.

Arsenic and Old Lace

Northern Arizona University and the Sedona International Film Festival are partnering to present The Classics, a monthly classic film series. NAU/SIFF Classics will be curated and hosted by School of Communication Professor Emeritus Paul Helford. The series will continue on Tuesday, Oct. 13 with “Arsenic and Old Lace”. The funniest — and perhaps best — Halloween movie ever! Cary Grant is hilarious, Raymond Massey channels Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein’s Monster, and Peter Lorre is perfect. Directed by Frank Capra, this gleefully macabre comedy follows two sweet, matronly aunts who “help” lonely old gentlemen by spiking their homemade elderberry wine with arsenic. Cary Grant stars as Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic and playwright who has famously condemned marriage. Battle of Oslo

“Battle of Oslo” tells the true story of Colonel Eriksen, who, on April 9, 1940, sank a German warship approaching Oslo. His decision delayed the Nazi invasion and saved the king and government — yet he was later treated unfairly by a military commission. While the outcome of the battle is well-known in Norway, the film delves into the lesser-known post-war trials of Eriksen. Confronted by a military commission, he must defend his actions against criticism for his early surrender of the fortress. Eriksen must fight a battle for fame and honor. The film combines two story lines and thus becomes both an exciting war film and a thriller intertwined.

Diamonds

The Italian box office sensation “Diamonds” is getting rave reviews in festivals around the world and from critics and audiences. It is an homage to the movies and to the art of costume design. A film director calls all his favorite actresses to film a movie set in Rome in the 70s that tells the vicissitudes revolving around a prestigious tailoring. He wants to make a film about women but he doesn’t reveal much: he observes them, takes cue. He throws them into another era, in a past where the noise of the sewing machines fills a workplace handled and populated by women, where men have minor and marginal roles and cinema can be told from another point of view: the one of costume. Between loneliness, passions, anxieties, heartbreaking absence and unbreakable bonds, reality and fiction permeate, as well as the lives of the actresses and those of the characters, the competition and the sisterhood, the visible and the invisible.

If poetry had a pop icon, Mary Oliver would be it. Celebrated bestseller, Pulitzer Prize winner, lover of dogs and long walks in the woods, openly queer but intensely private, Oliver was America’s unlikely contemporary mystic, stalking the ponds and forests of Cape Cod for nearly 50 years in order to open herself — and her readers — to the known and unknowable world. From a lonely childhood to literary fame, Oliver’s life was shaped by devotion to nature, paying attention, and the long journey toward learning to love and to be loved. Her poems inspire liberals and conservatives, atheists and believers, naturalists and urbanites, speaking directly to contemporary anxieties about attention, presence, and the human relationship with the natural world — issues that feel especially pressing in an era of climate crisis, digital distraction, and social fragmentation.

The Art of Adventure

In 1957, world renowned wildlife artist Robert Bateman and spirited biologist Bristol Foster embarked on a global expedition in a Land Rover they called “The Grizzly Torque” — a journey that ignited a deep love of our planet and set in motion a powerful story of environmental activism through art and science. “The Art of Adventure” is an inspiring and deeply human documentary about the extraordinary lifelong friendship between world renowned wildlife artist Robert Bateman and fearless biologist Bristol Foster. Through their epic 1957 journey around the world — armed with a 16mm camera and an artist’s brush — the film opens a vivid window onto a planet once wild and unscarred and a bond formed through curiosity, courage and love of nature. At its heart the film weaves together nature, art and activism showing how two very different men fought to protect the natural world: one thought art, the other through science. Now in their 90’s Bob and Bristol still find sanctuary in nature.

The Frequency of Healing Workshop

Join internationally acclaimed author and spiritual teacher Anita Moorjani for an immersive exploration of healing, consciousness, and the transformative power of living authentically. Discover how the frequency we embody—through our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and intentions—shapes our experience of health, relationships, and life itself. Drawing on the extraordinary insights from her near-death experience during a coma in the final stages of cancer, Anita shares how releasing fear, self-judgment, and the pressure to be someone other than ourselves can open the door to greater health, freedom, joy, and connection. Through personal stories, practical wisdom, and guided experiential practices, she invites participants to reconnect with their inner knowing, align with the frequency of love, and live more fully and fearlessly. Together, we’ll explore profound questions: What happens after death? How are we connected to loved ones who have passed? What is the true nature of consciousness?

The Green Realm

The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “The Green Realm” showing Sept. 16 and 17 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. Meet the filmmaker! Director, writer and film subject (and Sedona resident) Timothy Smith — along with special guests featured in “The Green Realm” — will be here in person to host the film and Q&A discussion after each screening. “The Green Realm” is a magical yet real story about Timothy Smith’s spiritual awakening and his connection to the Green Realm (The Fairies). Timothy's awakening led him up to the stars (Venus) where he was greeted by three Magnificent green beings (the one in the middle had a Kings Crown on) and the King telepathically told him to raise his frequency and vibration. Timothy went through six weeks of spiritual boot camp with his spiritual guides. They showed him three previous past lives … and that he had to heal in order to bring in his gifts from the Universe.

The Librarians

America’s war on books is more than a war on words. As an unprecedented wave of book banning is sparked in Texas, Florida, and beyond, librarians under siege join forces as unlikely defenders fighting for intellectual freedom on the front lines of democracy. In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories — triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of a large-scale coordinated extremist movement fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale. “A different kind of superhero movie.” — The Hollywood Reporter

Trailblazers

In 1982, brothers Troy and Gil Gillenwater decided to walk across the state of Arizona. Without GPS, mobile phones, or continuous trails, they cobbled together an 810-mile adventure that took over two months and two mules to complete. Little did they know, their trek would be an inspiration for the Arizona National Scenic Trail, now hiked by thousands each year. That remarkable origin story comes to life in “Trailblazers” — a 40-minute documentary produced by the Emmy Award-winning team at Quantum Leap Productions. The film premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre presented by the Sedona International Film Festival. The evening benefits the Arizona Trail Association Endowment, supporting the long-term protection, stewardship, and future of the Arizona Trail.

With the aid of the Boss RC-600 loop pedal, Victoria stacks intricate layers of guitar, bass, percussion, and vocal harmonies to create a backdrop for smokey, alto vocals and ripping lead guitar. Victoria’s Cuban roots and familiarity with multicultural music genres provide the inspiration for the strong rhythmic undertone she delivers in conjunction with a harmonic counterpart that fuses elements of jazz, blues, soul, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Caribbean, salsa, and rock ’n’ roll.
