Wicked Little Letters

Based on a stranger than fiction true story! In the 1920s English seaside town of Littlehampton, neighbours Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley) are embroiled in a scandal involving anonymous, profanity-laden letters. When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women - led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) - begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all. With sharp dialogue and dark comedic undertones, "Wicked Little Letters" explores themes of misogyny and repression in a riotous mystery comedy. Directed by Thea Sharrock (“Me Before You”), the film captures the absurdity and tragedy of a scandalous true story.

The People's Joker

After some *cough* complications, at its world premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, “The People’s Joker” is coming to Fox Theatre! Legally! In writer-director, Vera Drew's uproariously subversive queer coming-of-age origin story sees an aspiring clown whose attempts at humour fall painfully flat. While struggling with her gender identity, Joker (Vera Drew) desperately seeks acceptance in Gotham City's only comedy program, set in a world where comedy is forbidden. However, facing constant rejection, she joins forces with a motley crew of outcasts to form an underground anti-comedy troupe. Their illegal performances draw the attention of the city's cunning vigilante, setting the stage for a showdown between Joker and the sinister figure ruling over Gotham. The film also features comedy heavy hitters Scott Aukerman, Tim Heidecker, Maria Bamford and Bob Odenkirk in supporting roles.

La chimera

Named one of the top 5 international films of 2023 by the National Board of Review, “La Chimera” weaves a dreamlike narrative through Tuscany's archaeological wonders, invoking cinematic giants like Pasolini, Fellini, Olmi, and the Taviani brothers. The film pays homage to Italy's rich cinematic history, immersing viewers in a mind palace filled with ghosts and treasures. Arthur, a former archeological scholar with a knack for locating antiquities using a dowsing rod, pursues his long-lost love Beniamina amidst the Etruscan treasures. Reconnecting with his beloved's aristocratic mother, Flora (Isabella Rossellini), and caretaker Italia (Carol Duarte), Arthur's quest takes a compelling turn. Freshly released from an Italian prison, he reunites with his eclectic crew to unearth a fifth-century relic, sparking questions about ownership and the morality of plundering the past.

The Third Man

“Of all the movies that I have seen, this one most completely embodies the romance of going to the movies." - Roger Ebert Don't miss this brand new 75th Anniversary 4K restoration of the film cited by the British Film Institute as the greatest British film ever made. Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), a writer of pulp Westerns, arrives in a bombed-out, post-war Vienna at the invitation of his childhood friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles) only to find him dead. Martins develops the ultimate conspiracy theory after learning of a “third man” present at the time of Harry’s death, butting up against interference from British police officer Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), and falling head-over-heels for Harry’s grief-stricken lover Anna (Alida Valli). Thanks to brilliant performances; an evocative zither score; razor-sharp dialogue and truly dramatic use of light and shadow, this noir delight only grows in stature as the decades pass and remains a must see on the big screen.

Le Samouraï (4K Restoration)

The highly influential 1967 French hitman thriller returns to the big screen restored in stunning 4k using the original camera negative. In a career-defining performance, Alain Delon plays Jef Costello, a contract killer with samurai instincts. After carrying out a flawlessly planned hit, Jef finds himself caught between a persistent police investigator and a ruthless employer, and not even his armour of fedora and trench coat can protect him. An elegantly stylized masterpiece of cool by maverick director Jean-Pierre Melville, Le samouraï is a razor-sharp cocktail of 1940s American gangster cinema and 1960s French pop culture—with a liberal dose of Japanese lone-warrior mythology. Jean-Pierre Melville’s film style infiltrated the work of directors like Jim Jarmusch (“Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai”), David Fincher (“The Killer”), and Nicloas Winding Refin (“Drive”).
