Capitalism is a rat race, but who’s to blame when the rats turn on one another? The latest genre-blender from Korean director Park Chan-wook zeroes in on paper company star employee Man-soo, whose happy life — complete with a loving family, a dream house, and two very good dogs — is upturned when he abruptly gets laid off. Unemployed and increasingly desperate, he finds his peers in the same boat, fighting for a chance to provide in the face of ruthless downsizing and automation, until he comes up with a brilliant idea to eliminate the competition. Permanently. Lee makes a spectacularly chameleonic turn as Man-soo, whose hapless attempts at securing a job veer from comical to chilling, punctuated by bursts of bloody violence and humor as Man-soo’s wife, Mi-ri, begins to pick up on her husband’s mysterious nocturnal activities. But director Park never forgets that his protagonist and his fellow middle-aged rivals are human beings. Adapted from a Donald E. Westlake novel, No Other Choice deftly fuses black comedy, thriller, and domestic drama into a scathing indictment of corporate dehumanization and the trickle-down moral costs of the money-first, people-second mindset.
