The Talented Mr. Ripley is a 1999 American psychological thriller film written and directed by Anthony Minghella, based on Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel of the same name. To be young and carefree amid the blue waters and idyllic landscape of sun-drenched Italy is la dolce vita Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) craves but Tom is really a con artist who has been sent from New York City to Italy to convince Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), a rich and spoiled playboy, to return home. When Dickie's father demands that Tom bring his son back home to America without delay, Dickie and his beautiful expatriate girlfriend, Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow), never suspect the dangerous extremes to which the jealous Mr. Ripley will go.
