Two Caribbean immigrants, Jocelyn and Dah, work in the outskirts of Paris in the seedy underworld of cockfighting. The two men train the birds and handle the finances, working under the thumb of their third partner, the disreputable Pierre. When Jocelyn forms an attachment to one of the birds, who he has named “No Fear, No Die,” and as Pierre pushes the men to make the fights more violent, a dangerous clash of power occurs. Claire Denis’s rarely screened second feature is a stylish and atmospheric portrayal of oppression and survival, and a brutally unsentimental immigrant story.
