September 2019 will showcase a selection of short films nominated for our “Pammy” award to be given out at our annual Oscar party. Screenings on September 4th and 11th at 7:00 PM. A brief Q&A with one or more of the filmmakers will follow each screening.

Featured short films:

MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
A lonely man, reeling in the wake of destructive breakup, finds a flyer for a free game of bowling on his way to work one day. As he continues on his way, he is unaware that this was the first in a series of events that could finally set his life back on track.

Director – Quinton Miller
Born in Charleston West Virginia, Quinton Miller grew up adoring make-believe and watching movies. Spending his high-school years exploring music and photography, he later grew to appreciate the combined and collaborative artistry of filmmaking. While he has worked on a few small video productions, Mountain Climbing marks his first official foray into filmmaking.

ANOTHER WORD FOR ESCAPE
When a distraught man tries his hand at kidnapping, he finds that it’a not as easy as it looks.

JEWEL CITY REVIVAL
Many cities in the Rust Belt are struggling to survive in a post-industrial economy. Huntington, West Virginia is one of them. However, the city’s music and art scenes are flourishing. This film takes a close look at two new art-focused venues in the city and their efforts to reinvent and revitalize Huntington after decades of struggle.

Director – Mark Williams
Mark Williams is an Appalachia born electronic music and experimental video producer currently based in Huntington, WV. As a documentarian, Williams combines journalistic elements with experimental techniques to illuminate stories that defy common regional stereotypes and promote positive change within Appalachia.

SIRI
A combination of sci-fI, thriller and drama. A story of an isolated woman and the trouble she goes through in society. SIRI plays a vital role in her life, giving a conclusion not just to her but to all women.

THE MAN IN THE WHEELCHAIR
A man realizes that he has been duped into giving away money to a man on the street. But he quickly learns that he has gained far more than he has lost through the experience. A Film about Forgiveness by Kevin Hogan.

THE PUMPKIN HOUSE
Each year in the small West Virginia town of Kenova, one man turns his house into a Halloween Hot spot with a display of more than 3,000 Pumpkins. This documentary details what goes into the creation of “The Pumpkin House” and how it has become a regional and national treasure.

Director – Justin Prince
Justin Prince is a native of West Virginia and a graduate of Marshall University. He is proud of where he’s from as well as of the history and traditions they have there. One of those traditions he remembers fondly from his youth is the famous Kenova – Pumpkin House.

STATE INSPECTION
An anxious young man tries to talk to a woman he meets while waiting for his car at an auto repair shop.

Director – David Smith
David Smith made his first feature-length independent film when he was an 18-year-old sophomore at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Since then he has completed two other features, and a handful of shorts that have screened and won awards at various film festivals.

GIRL FRIEND
A girl wants to be “modern” enough to handle it when her dude proposes a non-traditional relationship. But that doesn’t fit into the love story she wants.

Director – Laura Holliday
Laura Holliday is a graduate of both The Second City Hollywood Conservatory and UCB LA’s improv program for comedy writing and performance. In 2017 she was selected as a Sundance Ignite Fellow for her short film “Persephone Goes Home.” Her videos commissioned by FunnyorDie.com, like her parody trailer “A Movie for Women (by Men)” have gathered over a million views. In December, Laura’s original digital series “Brief and Futile Love Stories” which she wrote, directed and starred in premiered on Comedy Central’s digital platforms.
