OFFICIAL SELECTION: Hamptons International Film Festival
Henri Dauman may be the most famous photographer you've never heard of, at least not by name. Dauman's iconic, sharp, thoughtful photos of artists, world leaders, and significant historical events published in LIFE and other publications include perfectly-crystalized images of Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Miles Davis, Edith Piaf, Yves Saint Laurent, Marcel Marceau, Andy Warhol, Elvis Presley, JFK & Jean-Luc Godard, as well as portraits of ordinary people, civil rights protesters and, notably, stunning New York City photos that launched his 40-year career after immigrating to America.
But for all his achievements, few know the details of Henri's remarkable origin story. Behind the lens of his Nikon camera is an awe inspiring man who has time-and-again refused to submit to the adversity of his early life. Stepping out from behind the camera for the first time, the self-taught perfectionist remains every bit the engaging storyteller, recounting his reinvention from an orphaned French Holocaust survivor to one of the 20th century's preeminent photojournalists. Today, his success is not only defined by his million picture archive but by his thirty five relatives that traveled halfway across the world to honor his life's work in his most recent retrospective exhibition opening in Paris. Through love, persistence and uncompromising vision Henri Dauman has achieved an artistic legacy for the generations.
