Jazz in movement and music can be beautiful, puzzling, avant garde, authentic and theatrical. It is forever evolving. 'Uprooted' is a feature-length documentary celebrating the history, lineage, and future progressions of jazz dance — with a stellar cast of leading industry experts, award-winning choreographers, and legendary performers. The film is a ground-breaking look at the roots of jazz dance in Africa and following the evolution of this incredible dance form through every single decade and genre. Exploring and commenting on political and social influences, "Uprooted" is an honest conversation about jazz dance addressing topics such as appropriation, racism, socialism, and sexism. This is a story of triumph over adversity, oppression, and privilege as well as a celebration, because ultimately, what all people have in common is rhythm and a basic human need to get down! Special appearances by Debbie Allen, George Faison, Chita Rivera, Camille A. Brown and Thomas F. DeFrantz. "Upr

Description

"Hiplet: Because We Can" was created with the intention to inspire young Black women around the world. This film brings the Hiplet Ballerinas to center stage. Hiplet fuses classical pointe technique with hip-hop and urban dance styles. Hiplet has blossomed immensely since it's creation by Artistic Director Homer Hans Bryant in the early 90s. "Hiplet: Because We Can" was shot in Chicago on the South Side at the Grand Ballroom, a hidden gem that opened back in 1923 once known as the Cinderella Ballroom. With the unique style of a short film, music video and documentary, this film is meant to capture how amazing these young Black girls are, how they battle adversity and how they’ve elevated their craft in the beautiful city of Chicago.
