Description

A modern re-telling of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic tale of adultery, betrayal, and life as an outcast.

Adapted by Phyllis Nagy | Directed by Jeffrey Mandel

The story takes place in 17th Century Boston, where young Hester Prynne has been caught committing adultery when she gives birth to a daughter. As her punishment she must wear a scarlet letter “A” on her chest for the rest of her life.

This play is a brilliant, unusual adaptation of the classic novel and has a decidedly contemporary slant. Although set in Puritan times, it deals with issues which make it an almost feminist deconstruction of the novel even as it preserves the familiar story of Hester Prynne, Roger Chillingworth and Arthur Dimmesdale.

Adult language and themes. Parents are strongly cautioned.
