In 1963 France, Anne, a young and talented student, gets pregnant,
seeing her opportunities to finish her studies and excel slipping away
from her. As her final exams approach and her social life begins to
fade, Anne's pregnancy progresses, forcing her to confront the shame and
pain of an abortion, even if she must risk prison to do so.
What the critics are saying:
Despite its decades-ago setting, Happening has never been more relevant,
particularly for audiences in America. Diwan’s drama serves as a
warning of what people may experience if Roe is overturned.

Happening goes further as a beautiful coming-of-age story, where Anne’s
long pursuit to end the pregnancy is also one of self-discovery.

Films don't get any more timely than this French drama about an unwanted pregnancy. Anamaria Vartolomei is a revelation.
