When Billy Peltzer is given a new pet by his Dad, he's forced to learn the rules of keeping this strange little creature named Gizmo: don't get it wet, don't feed it after midnight, and keep it away from bright light. However, when water gets accidentally spilled on Gizmo, it unleashes a chain of events that ends with an army of malevolent, scaly monsters running amok on Christmas Eve in Billy's unsuspecting small town.
