1958 • Elvis Presley, Carolyn Jones, Walter Matthau
Elvis Presley gives an impressive performance in what was his favorite film role of his career. It
includes some musical numbers (including “Hard Headed Woman”), but this film is mostly a
drama crafted in the expert hands of director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca). It’s not what you’d
expect from either Presley or Curtiz, and it’s a pleasant surprise. Carolyn Jones (Morticia from
The Addams Family) is excellent, and Walter Matthau is a committed bad guy.
