In this cerebral and meditative cinematic expedition, ship captain Ida (DOGTOOTH’s Angeliki Papoulia) sails from Marseille to Corsica with a crew of five men, none of whom speak the same language, to trace the route of the French Foreign Legion. With a hypnotic pace and arresting visuals (Wittman acts as her own cinematographer and shoots on gauzy, textured 16mm), HUMAN FLOWERS OF FLESH is slow cinema at its finest, a liminal study of adventure and discovery evocative of Claire Denis’ BEAU TRAVAIL, but charting a course entirely of its own.
