Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), along with his wife, Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), and five children, endeavor to build their dream estate next to the concentration camp. While the Höss family entertains guests, swims at the river, and leisurely enjoys the summer season, the mechanized genocide occurring just beyond their purview punctuates their home life, but does not elicit a reaction beyond indifference. Loosely adapted from the eponymous novel by Martin Amis, The Zone of Interest is a radically open film that refuses to close the door on history; it remains, dangerously and eternally ajar.
