Years after her ethnic Indian family were expelled from their home in Uganda by the dictatorship of Idi Amin, twentysomething Mina (Sarita Choudhury) and her family now live in Mississippi running a motel. Mina begins a steamy romance with Demetrius (Denzel Washington), a handsome Black carpet cleaner. Their relationship exposes the divide between the Indian and Black communities in this region of Mississippi. Tackling the thorny issues of racism, colorism, and displacement, Mississippi Masala is a sensual and radical celebration of love’s transformative power. This screening will be followed by a community conversation led by Mixed at Mizzou, exploring topics such as interracial relationships, diaspora, and cultural identity.
