Description

Nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film in the 2024 Academy Awards, Four Daughters is a transfixing portrait of a Tunisian family undone by political and religious dogma. Olfa Hamrouni is the mother of four daughters, two of whom disappeared from their home years ago, radicalized to run away. Attempting to understand the split between the siblings despite their shared circumstances, director Kaouther Ben Hania stages re-enactments of key moments in the family’s history with professional actors standing in for the missing daughters. Interspersing these staged performances with confessionals from Olfa and her children, Four Daughters is a bold and insightful work of nonfiction cinema that explores the nature of memory, inherited trauma, and the ties that bind mothers and daughters.
