Description

"Into the Woods draws plotlines and characters from a variety of Brothers Grimm fairy tales, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack and the Beanstalk. James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim were drawn by the true morals of the main characters of these stories. However, the found that the stories were all very short and, rather than creating an entirely new tale or trying to expand material for just one story, they created the characters of the Baker and his Wife. They aimed to make the first act about each characters' individual quest, and the second act about the consequences of their actions and coming together as a community." -Music Theatre International

Into the Woods debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, before transferring to Broadway in 1987. The original Broadway production garnered 10 Tony Award nominations, winning 3, including Best Origninal Score (Sondheim) and  Best Book (Lapine). The musical has had numerous international productions, Off-Broadway revivals, 2 US National tours, a movie adaptation by Disney, and 2 Broadway revivals.
