Written and directed by Tamara Jenkins, this cult classic illustrates what it means to grow up poor in the 90210 zip code. Set in 1976, fourteen year-old Vivian Abramowitz (Natasha Lyonne) lives in the outskirts of Beverly Hills with her single, divorced father Murray (Alan Arkin) and her two younger brothers. Dedicated to ensuring his kids have a stellar education even if they struggle to keep the bills paid, Murray frequently moves the family to ensure they remain in the 90210. When Murray’s brother offers stable housing in exchange for sheltering his daughter Rita (Marisa Tomei), a rehab escapee, Vivian’s life is turned topsy-turvy by her cousin’s free, sexually liberated sense of self.
