"More fun than a barrel of Jean-Paul Sartre." —Rotten Tomatoes
"The feverish, wish-fulfillment embodiment of everyone's unspoken dream." —Film.com
“This stylish, hugely likeable bit of adrenaline-pumped Euro-nonsense should shatter the illusions of those convinced that all subtitled fare is musty, wordy and dull.” —Empire
In this visually and conceptually impressive film, two-bit Berlin criminal Manni delivers some smuggled loot for his boss, Ronnie, but accidentally leaves the 100,000 mark payment in a subway car. Given 20 minutes to come up with the money, he calls his girlfriend, Lola (Franka Potente, in an auspicious debut), who sprints through the streets of the city to try to beg the money out of her bank manager father and get to Manni before he does something desperate.
Writer/director/composer Tom Tykwer (HEAVEN, CLOUD ATLAS) hit the ground running in the world cinema game with this brisk, kinetic thriller, equally at ease with cosmic possibility and dizzy romance, charming arthouses and mall cinemas in equal measure.
