Description

With Ran, legendary director Akira Kurosawa reimagines Shakespeare's King Lear as a singular historical epic set in sixteenth-century Japan. Majestic in scope, the film is Kurosawa's late-life masterpiece, a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power. Before the screening, we will show a BC-made short documentary called Tsunagu with an introduction from the director Lucy Komori. Tsunagu description: Canadians of Japanese descent have a traumatic shared experience of uprooting and dislocation during World War II. Many families have not shared these experiences with their children and grandchildren. Tsunagu, which mean to connect, explores the generational impact of losing this history.
