In 1705 Great Britain is at war with France and frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) cannot be bothered to govern her empire properly. Leading all administrative duties to her secret lover Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz), all seems to be well until Sarah’s impoverished cousin Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives in search of employment. Relegated to being a maid but desiring a return to her former aristocratic position, Abigail schemes to usurp Sarah’s role as the Queen’s favorite.
