LOVE THRU DARKNESS
A Documentary Premiere and Filmmaker Q&A
SUN, FEB 23 @ 5:30PM
An intimate portrait of a rising artist, Love Thru Darkness is the story of a song, and how beatbox, jazz, and hip hop artist Napoleon Maddox helped it come into the world.
Maddox interweaves his own personal challenges with history to craft music that offers a vision for a liberated future. A quintessential African American tale, Love Thru Darkness traces Maddox's musical journey from Cincinnati’s West End and famed Beat Box Studio to the famous Parisian New Morning jazz club and the premiere of "L’Ouverture de Toussaint.”
Listening to Maddox's music is a trip through hip hop, jazz, and African diasporic fusion. He collaborates with some of the most respected musicians alive today — Roy Nathanson and Papanosh (New York), Hamid Drake (Chicago), Curtis Fowlkes (New York), Sorg (France), Jowee Omicil (Canada), Bad Fat (France), Brian Greer (Cincinnati). His recordings are a who’s who of hiphop, jazz and liberation music.
A Media Working Group project.
