Description

Released in the same year as The Hour of the Furnaces, Memories of Underdevelopment represents another starting point of Third Cinema. Adapted from a novel by Edmundo Desnoes and directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, this film follows a bourgeois intellectual during the aftermath of the 1961 Bay of Pigs incident in Cuba. After his wife and family have fled to Miami, Sergio (Sergio Corrieri) spends his days in Havana contemplating his existence. One of the first Cuban films to earn global acclaim, Memories of Underdevelopment stands out for using its protagonist to explore what it means to disengage from revolution.
