Feeling adrift at home and at school, Latina teen Diana Guzman (Michelle Rodriguez) finds a space where she can thrive at a boxing gym in her Brooklyn neighborhood. There, she learns the joy of sport and community, as well as falling for a rival fighter. A raw and fearless depiction of teen girlhood at the margins, Girlfight faced an uphill battle for funding during its production due to its “unknown Latina lead.” However, this directorial debut from Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body) ultimately became an award-winner that launched the career of Michelle Rodrigeuz as well as inspiring several women-in-boxing films that came after.
