Description

Nominated for Best Picture at the 2025 Academy Awards, this formally inventive adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel documents the fierce friendship forged between two Black teenagers at an abusive reform school in 1960s Florida. Director RaMell Ross’s sophomore follow-up to Hale County This Morning, This Evening (Official Selection True/False 2018), Nickel Boys is a radical work of American cinema offering a new way to depict historical and systemic anti-Black violence.

Presented with the Jonathan B. Murray Center for Documentary Journalism, this screening will be followed by a Q&A with Academy Award-nominated filmmaker RaMell Ross, moderated by Robert Greene, filmmaker-in-chief at the Murray Center.
