Meet Me in St. Louis

Our Dark December series continues with this Technicolor confection from Director Vincente Minelli that may be candy-coloured on the surface but hints at the darkness at the heart of a family in transition. Set in St. Louis in 1903, the film centres around the Smith family and their four beautiful daughters, including Esther (Judy Garland) and little Tootie (Margaret O'Brien). The family is shocked when Mr. Smith reveals that he's been transferred to New York, which means they must leave their beloved St. Louis, a reality that sends them all into a equal mixture of melancholy and fear over the unknown lives they're about to embark on. As they slowly come to grips with all that they'll be leaving behind (the cute boy next door!), they sing through their worries and each grow up a little bit along the way. The film features several memorable songs songs by Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin, including "The Trolley Song", and of course, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."

Deep Red - 4K Restoration!

What better way to kick off our Dark December series than with this classic from horror master, Dario Argento! This simple, Christmas-set slasher begins with the murder of psychic whose body is found by a musician named Marcus (David Hemmings). Marcus feels obligated to track down the killer so he teams up with a notoriety-seeking reporter (Daria Nicolodi) and soon the two realize that the murderer may actually be circling closer and closer to them. It becomes apparent that they must work fast or they might become the maniac's next victims. With this movie, Argento perfected the classy, ultra-violent sub-genre that would come to be known as “giallo.” This includes Goblin’s soundtrack, which is a spook-a-delic prog-rock masterpiece that beautifully complements the movie’s dreamy mood. Get ready to be played like a (Christmas) fiddle! This movie is a real trip!

Bell, Book and Candle

We're celebrating the dark side of December with a movie that may not seem very Christmas-y on the surface, but actually has an offbeat holiday vibe that we're sure will cast a spell over you. Set in a snowy New York City, BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE reunites VERTIGO co-stars, James Stewart and Kim Novak, in a charming adaptation of John van Druten’s popular Broadway comedy. Stewart plays Shep, a bumbling Manhattanite mortal who becomes entranced by the beguiling Gillian (Novak), a bored, secret witch who runs a shop in Greenwich Village. When Gillian finds out Shep is engaged to her old college rival, she decides to cast a love spell on him to break up the couple and make him hers. The plan works great until she finds herself actually developing feelings for Shep...which might mean ultimately sacrificing her powers in the name of love. We guarantee this film will make your December a 67% more magical!
