Canoe Dig It?

Canoe Dig It? is a mockumentary comedy about a fictional canoeing competition in Northern Maine for the nonfictional sport of “Freestyle Canoeing”, a form of performative canoeing best described as “canoe dancing”. Competitors paddle out and spin, dip, and “dance” in circles in perfect synchronization with the music of their choice. The film tracks a handful of quirky and curiously relatable competitors vying for the blue ribbon at the Moosehead Regional Finals. We follow our cadre of diverse canoeists’- a cutthroat perfectionist, a backwoods natural, an aging underdog, a squabbling couple of summer camp owners, and a hard rocking bartender- as they prepare for the big stage (lake), seeing glimpses into their personal lives, their eclectic preparation methods, and learning what it takes to make it to the top of the Freestyling world. Director and Star Samuel Dunning will be joining us for a talk back/Q&A after the film.

ArtsCinema Series: The Danish Collector: DelaCroix to Gauguin

For many years no-one was interested in the art of the Impressionists. Artists like Monet, Degas and Renoir were vilified, attacked, and left penniless as a result. Then, something remarkable happened. A new breed of collectors emerged and, before long, they were battling to acquire any work by these new, radical artists that they could find. Amongst them was the visionary Danish businessman Wilhelm Hansen. It was an extraordinary moment in art history; full of drama, intrigue and subterfuge. From Hansen’s beautiful house and gardens at Ordrupgaard to the streets of bohemian Paris, this film takes you on a journey to discover some of the best examples of 19th-century French art ever collected.

ArtsCinema Series: I, Claude Monet

From award-winning director Phil Grabsky comes this fresh new look at Monet – possibly the world’s favourite artist – through his own words. Using letters and other private writings I, Claude Monet reveals new insight into the man who painted Impression, Sunrise, the picture that gave birth to impressionism, and who became perhaps the most influential artist of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Monet’s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even suicide. However, as his art developed and his love of gardening led to the glories of his Giverny garden, his humour, insight and love of life are revealed. Told through Monet’s own words and shot on location at the very spots he painted, the film features his most loved paintings in an unforgettable, immersive art experience. Directed by Phil Grabsky

Reverand Horton Heat with the Messer Chups

Seeing REVEREND HORTON HEAT live is a transformative experience. Flames come off the guitars. Heat singes your skin. There’s nothing like the primal tribal rock & roll transfiguration of a Reverend Horton Heat show. Jim becomes a slicked-back 1950's rock & roll shaman channeling Screamin’ Jay Hawkins through Buddy Holly, while Jimbo incinerates the Stand-Up Bass. And then there are the“Heatettes”. Those foxy rockabilly chicks dressed in poodle-skirts and cowboy boots slamming the night away. It’s like being magically transported into a Teen Exploitation picture from the 1950's that’s currently taking place in the future. Listening to the REVEREND HORTON HEAT is tantamount to injecting pure musical nitrous into the hot rod engine of your heart. The Reverend’s commandants are simple... ROCK HARD, DRIVE FAST, AND LIVE TRUE.

One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the huge impact it had on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh. Seeing Japanese art in art shops and small Parisian galleries and then creating his own perception of Japan – through in-depth research, print collecting and detailed discussions with other artists – Van Gogh’s encounter with Japanese artworks gave his work a new and exciting direction.
