Michael Galmer: Learning the Art of Silver

Join feature exhibition artist Michael Izrael Galmer for a talk geared toward high school students. Michael's distinguished work is in the permanent collections of Cooper Hewitt Museum, Smithsonian Design Museum; Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum; Evergreen Museum & Library of the Johns Hopkins University, Newark Museum and the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center, New York. This event will feature a walk-through of his exhibit, a discussion of his career as an artist, and an explanation of his silver making process. The artist lecture will be followed by an optional hour long tour of the Biggs’ silver collection and permanent galleries. This program is free, but pre-registration is required. During our 25th anniversary year, the Biggs Museum of American Art hopes to provide an opportunity for teachers and their students to experience its collection.achieve this, the Biggs and the Department of Education will provide a series of 3 professional learning workshops aligned to the Delaware arts standards with the expectation that 25 schools will “adopt” works of art and that teachers will create instructional tools that will support learning about these objects. These in class lessons can be supplemented by either an admission-free field trip to the museum or an in-school visit from the Biggs’ Staff.

Delaware Sampler Symposium: Delaware Discoveries: Girlhood Discoveries, 1750-1850

This symposium celebrates the release of the new publication of the same title by Gloria Seaman Allen and Cynthia Steinhoff, with contributions from Susi Slocum, published by the Chesapeake Book Company and Biggs Museum of American Art and designed by James F. Brisson. These talks will also create the context necessary to understand the Biggs Museum’s feature exhibition of over 100 samplers illustrated within the publication. This is the largest and most comprehensive study of Delaware girlhood needlework of the 18th and 19th century ever conducted. The book is fully illustrated and comprised of approximately 350 pages and 20 chapters covering topics spanning the various needlework instructors across the state.

Member Event: Birds and Brews with the Biggs and the Delaware Nature Society

Spend the day with Delaware’s avian population and the prints of John James Audubon during a partner program with the Delaware Nature Society. This event is open to members of the Delaware Nature Society and members of the Biggs. The day begins at Abbot’s Mill Nature Center in Milford, DE with a birding walk led by a Delaware Nature Society staff member. Afterwards, the group will head to the Biggs for a boxed lunch and “brew” of your choice (beer or coffee!), followed by a tour of the Biggs’ exhibit “John James Audubon and His Influence Today,” led by a Biggs’ Curator. Registration includes boxed lunch and admission to Abbot’s Mill and the Biggs. A complimentary shuttle with limited seating will also be provided from Ashland Nature Center to transport those traveling from New Castle County. The shuttle will depart from Ashland Nature Center at 8:30 and will return by 2:30. Space is limited and registrations are required for all participants.

The panel will be moderated by Jeffrey Gordon, President of the American Birding Association and panelists will include Dr. Jean Woods, Curator of Birds at the Delaware Museum of Natural History, and Dr. Stephanie Delamarie, Associate Curator of Fine Arts at Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library. This is a member event and includes a continnental breakfast and Bloody Mary and Mimosa bar.
