GEORGE C. WOLFE | USA | 2023 | 106 MIN | PG-13 | ENGLISH
Colman Domingo soars in this rousing biographical drama, which shines a long-overdue spotlight on the contributions of Bayard Rustin, the trailblazing activist who spearheaded the 1963 March on Washington. In the early 1960s, Rustin (Domingo) is a central part of the American civil rights movement and a close friend and supporter of Martin Luther King Jr. (Aml Ameen). But Rustin, an openly gay man and former Communist, is a polarizing figure within the activist community. Pushed to the sidelines of the movement he helped foster, Rustin sets his sights on a new goal: to stage one of the biggest and most impactful political rallies the nation has ever seen. Despite his monumental importance, Rustin’s legacy has largely been overshadowed by those of his contemporaries because of his sexuality. Director George C. Wolfe provides a much-needed corrective to those decades of neglect, offering a lively look at Rustin’s groundbreaking work and the fearless passion that drove him.
